Does Google Give Preference to Content Above the Fold?
John Mueller answers what Google's preferences are with regard to content that's above the fold
Above the fold Explained | Web Pro Glossary – Website Design Vol. 1
How to explain above the fold to your clients: Above the fold is a place where visitors can see something without having to scroll down a web page. It is where we place a website’s most important content. For example, if you want visitors to submit a form, give that form a place high on the page, along with content encouraging visitors to interact with it.
What is above the fold? It’s kinda like on the days of printed newspapers. Readers wanted to see the day’s most important news without flipping open the broadsheet. This is why lead stories were printed above the crease where the paper was folded in half.

What is Above The Fold Section
The Website “Above the Fold” section is the part of the page that is visible to the user without scrolling. This visible area is important because it’s where you can make a good first impression and entice users to stay on your site. This article will discuss what makes up the Above the Fold
Section and how you can use it to your advantage.
The term “Above the fold” comes from newspaper design, in which the most important stories are placed “above the fold” of the paper so that they are visible to readers who pick up the paper & flip through it. In the internet’s early days, designers carried this idea to web design, placing the most important content “above the fold” so that users would see it when they first arrived on a website.
However, with the advent of responsive design and mobile browsing, the concept of “the fold” has become less important. Users are now accustomed to scrolling down web pages, and designers have more freedom to place content where it looks best without worrying about whether or not it will be “above the fold.”
Above The Fold Section in SEO
The Website “Above The Fold” section is the portion of the page that is visible without scrolling. This area is generally considered the most important part of the page, as it’s the first thing visitors will see.
Above The Fold is important in SEO because it’s where most keywords and phrases are found. Therefore, when optimizing a website for search engines, it’s important to ensure that the “Above The Fold” section is keyword-rich so your site will rank high in search results.
Benefits of Good Above the Fold Section
It’s been said that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The same could be said for websites. A website with a good design doesn’t mean it’s a good one. Likewise, just because a website has a bad design doesn’t mean it’s a bad website. However, the adage “you never get a second chance to make a first impression” is just as true on the internet as in real life. This is where the “above the fold” section comes in.
The same principle applies to websites. The content “above the fold” is the content that is immediately visible when a user loads a web page. This is typically the most important content on the page, as it’s what will make the first impression on visitors.
